Decorating sugar cookies for Christmas?
I'm planning on decorating some sugar cookies for Christmas next week. I've never made sugar cookies or decorated them before, so I had a few questions. I hope you all can help? 
1.) Is Royal Icing the best for decorating?
2.) Will I have to have two different consistencies of icing? (One for piping, one for flooding)
3.) This is somewhat linked to the question above: I was wanting to make Christmas trees with ornaments, so I will have to layer icing. If I do have to use two difference consistencies of icing, would you use the thicker one as the decorations and the looser one for flooding/all over color?
4.) What is your favorite sugar cookie recipe?
5.) What are your favorite candies/decorations to use? (Colored sugar, M&M's, ect.)
6.) Can I buy the supplies anywhere? (Target, grocery store, Micheal's?)
7.) Any other tips/tricks/comments?

Royal icing gets really hard so I wouldn't recommend using it for frosting. Go as easy as possible.
Use food coloring and color plain old vanilla frosting or cream cheese. I would use betty crocker. If you are going to make christmas trees use mini m&m's for the balls. you can knead yellow starburst until they are soft and cut out a star for the top. Hear is the sugar cookie recipe we use every year for every holiday.
2 3/4 c flour
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp baking powder
1 c butter
1 1/2 c sugar
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla
3-4 tbs heavy cream
a variation on this would be to use lemon or orange juice in place of the cream or peppermint extract instead of vanilla.
once the dough is made separate into 2 balls. refrigerate for 2 hours. roll out to 1/4 inch thick and use cookie cutter. bake for 7-10 min at 350*
